PowerPLAY caters to children 5-19 who are overweight to obese or
who simply need to change their dietary and activity lifestyle habits
and wish to learn how. The program focuses on personal and family
health risk factors, to attempt to discern the children at risk
for diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and other illnesses
related to obesity.
PowerP.L.A.Y. offers several programs:
1- Group Program
2- One on one
3- Parent- child Program
4- Parent Program
5- Kosher Program
All children are separated into two age groups 5-12 and 13-19.
PowerPLAY was designed by a pediatrician. So that, children can
PLAY. Thus, treadmills, pulleys, steps, weights and a stationnary
bicycle have been installed at Sante L.A. and made accessible, when
a trainer is present for supervision, to all the children involved
in the program at all times.
The GROUP at P.L.A.Y.
The program involves two 2 hour sessions, or one 3 hour session
a week extended over a six week period. The first half of each session
consists of practical, entertaining educational tools that expose
the child to nutritional and behavioral changes he/she can immediately
apply to modify their current lifestyle. These are taught through
art, music therapy as well as improvisation. The second half of
each session is dedicated to a unique and comprehensive fitness
training curriculum. Each child will engage in varied physical activities
such as yoga, tai-chi, African Brazilian Dance, hip-hop, kick boxing
and aerobics, just to name a few.
ONE ON ONE
Every child has different needs. If your child has special physical
or emotional needs that would not allow his participation in the
group setting activities, the one on one option is offered. For
instance, children diagnosed with the Attention Deficit Disorder
will benefit more from such an option. There are exceptions to every
rule, the decision of placement is ultimately left to the discretion
of the physician. Private sessions are then coordinated for nutrition,
fitness, behaviour modification and/or art therapy. Each child,
on an individual specific path. Some children require more dietary
than behaviour modification and vice versa. Each child is monitored
throughout by the physician, both in terms of weight loss but as
well to ensure that growth is not impeded while on the program.
The PARENT-CHILD Program
All the studies show that children benefit tremendously when their
parents are attempting to lose weight. Parents usually preferr this
option especially when they themselves are struggling to lose weight
and need help. That is why this program was developed at Sante L.A.
Children and their parent(s) attend 2 hour weekly sessions over
a course period of 8 weeks . Each two hour block encompasses nutrition
in the first hour and fitness in the second. The fitness component
being kickboxing, yoga, hip hop, African Brazilian dance, aerobics,
home basics and heat. Behaviour modification is also included, so
as to teach parents how to set limits and how to boost their children's
self-esteem throughout.
The PARENT Program
This program was developed by an overwhelming demand from the parents
of children at Sante L.A. This program gives parents 2 hours twice
a week to focus on their health. These are struggling adults who
need to lose weight. This program was developed with the help of
an adult gastroenterologist in the frame of Sante L.A. . Each session
focuses on nutrition in the first hour and fitness in the second.
The first hour discusses how to..How to lower your cholesterol,
read labels, cook better, eat out in a healthy way even at fast
food / take-out places etc.. The second hour promotes fitness, exposing
the parents to Yoga, Tai chi, African Brazilian dance, heat and
aerobic circuit training. Adults are weighed once a week.
The KOSHER Program
Certain children having different nutritional and fitness requirements
due to their religious beliefs, Powerplay offers "KOSHER POWER".
A weekly 2 hour session that spans over the course of 8 weeks. Sessions
including nutrition counselling, fitness, behaviour modification
and art therapy . The art of cooking kosher foods the healthy way,
eating out at kosher places and choosing the right way to order
